June 2026 Promotion Test Information
Dear Parents and Students,
The next promotion test will take place Thursday, June 18th - Saturday, June 20th. There will be NO regular classes from Thursday, June 18th - Saturday, June 20th. Depending on the amount of testers that sign-up, we may reduce the amount of testing days. We will update you once sign-ups end. The deadline to sign-up is Monday, June 1st. Please see the front office to sign-up.
This promotion test will be run differently from previous promotion tests. It will be run in a competition format.
If you are currently a poom belt and would like to test for 1st degree black belt, please see the front office as there are additional steps you need to take.
Overview:
- If a student passes the poomsae AND board breaking portions of the test, they are eligible to promote to the next rank, BUT must pay the $80.00 testing fee to recieve their new belt.
- There is NO UP-FRONT COST to sign-up to test. All you have to do is see the front office and tell us you would like to test. (There is still a testing fee for passing students, explained below)
- Students will be assigned a testing date and time after sign-ups end.
- Students will be assigned an opponent to compete against.
- Students will compete against their assigned opponent at the promotion test.
- Students will perform a randomly chosen form within their belt range.
- The student with the superior form wins.
- The winner PASSES the poomsae portion of the promotion test.
- The losing student FAILS the test and must wait until the next promotion test to test again.
- The winner must also pass the board breaking section of the test in order to be eligible to promote.
- If both competitiors are deemed to have performed at a high level, we may consider passing both students.
- On the opposite end, if both competitiors are deeemed to have performed poorly, we may consider failing both students.

Testing Material:
For this test, we will look at a students overall performance of their poomsae, with an emphasis on the technique. There should be NO pattern mistakes during a student’s poomsae performance.

Promotion Testing Uniform and Appearance Guidelines:
Students are expected to look presentable when promotion testing.
A clean, full-sleeve white uniform must be worn.
A correctly tied belt must be worn (https://youtu.be/YEE2ATmvG2A?si=NE3_kBX-hZjEpAxe).
Solid white or black undershirts only.
NO jewelry.
Hair must be tied up/out of the way of the tester’s face (hair should not drop below the shoulders and not cover the testers face significantly).

Promotion Test Etiquette:
Arrive early (30 minutes before the start of your test).
Adhere to the uniform and appearance guidelines.
Begin warming up, stretching, and reviewing testing material upon arrival.
No talking, playing around, or making excessive noise.
Be respectful of other testers and be actively engaged in watching others perform.
No clapping until a tester has completed all of their forms.
Following board breaking, set your broken boards on the ground and do not make noise with them while sitting.
When receiving your belt from a head instructor, use two hands when the belt is passed to you, bow, and say “Gams-hamnida” (thank you).
